Dylan was tired.
Despite his talk with Hot Rod; he’d basically listened for a couple of days and then just; bailed. It was hard to listen to adults when they weren’t in your shoes or feeling the way you felt. So he had decided he didn’t need to talk to adults anymore, he’d make it on his own. And one day he’d join the Autobots and prove to the whole damn world that rejected him he wasn’t the mistake he’d started to feel like.
The ten year old just hoped it wouldn’t involve dumpster diving all the time.
Luckily, he’d come just in time that night for when the resteraunts were basically tossing good food. Wrapped up even. But it still made him gag a little at the thought that he might actually eat that stuff. He hadn’t sunk so low before, he thought as he sat beside the dumpster of the McDonalds and tried to convince himself he had to get used to this.
“You can take care of yourself,” He muttered. “Don’t be such a wimp.”
But as the skittering in the alley sounded, he couldn’t help but jump just a little.

"Hey kid. Why aren't you at home?"
A black and white mech towered over the child before sitting down and shrinking some of the height difference. He tilted his head curiously and wondered why the kid was eating out of dumpsters. Even on Cybertron, they took care of each other... mostly. At least he did. He couldn't vouch for everyone.
"You shouldn't eat from dumpsters. There's so many things wrong with them. The germs and bacteria. The name's Jazz. What's your name?"
He offered a gentle smile, hoping to put the kid at ease.

Dylan nearly jumped out of his skin.
Of course, he'd been a bit jumpy before all of this, but now? Extra jumpy. He knew well enough that even the streets of Autobot City weren't always safe or friendly, right? Still, he was a bit surprised when yet again he found a Bot he didn't know... He was running into a lot of them lately, wasn't he? He guessed that there were a lot of them coming into planet or town. Interesting. But beside the point. Was this guy with the program? If he was Dylan knew he was getting hauled back.
So he did what he always did, he got defensive.
"I uh... I wasn't eating from dumpsters! I was just... Trying to inspect them, yeah. This one looks good," Dylan shoved the dumpster lid down and patted it with a shit-eating grin. Definitely trying to hide he wasn't supposed to be out there but only in the way a ten year old would. "That's what I'm doing out here. I may look like a kid, but I'm really forty... City inspector, very serious job."
Of course, he avoided giving his name too. No doubt the Autobots in the program had put out feelers and were looking for him as they spoke after all.

"Kid you don't need to lie to me. And besides. City inspectors don't work at night, too dangerous. Construction, enforcers, and emergency workers work at night."
Jazz patted his lap.
"The ground is filthy. I won't let you sit on it. It's getting a little chilly for a human."
Jazz then played some soft music to entice the kid. Music was good, right? He wanted to be as calm and slow as possible. He ran himself slightly hotter than normal. It wouldn't hurt, but it would be comfortable for the child. But in all honesty, why WAS a kid just wandering the streets at night? Was this a normal thing here on Earth? Was there something more going on? Jazz didn't know.
"You didn't tell me your name. I don't want to keep calling you kid because that can get disrespectful after awhile. I want to call you by your name."

Dylan raised an eyebrow.
Honestly relaxing music be damned, he wasn’t going on his lap for a multitude of reasons. None of them to be rude - honestly. But getting close or sitting on laps like that made him genuinely nervous - with good reason if you knew his story after all.
Either way, the guy definitely wasn’t going away. So he guessed he might as well indulge him anyway.
“I uh… Thanks but no thanks. Not to be an aft or anything,” Dylan held up a hand in response. “Just I uh…. yeah the lap thing just isn’t for me.” He explained.
Oh right, his name, on one hand he didn’t want to reply. But he had a feeling that was just going to drag this out and make it harder than it needed to be. So he’d just skip the last name… “Dylan, my names Dylan,” he replied. “You must be new to Earth, huh?” He observed - given his not freaking out about him being alone,

Jazz raised the Cybertronian version of a brow. The kid was going to get sick since it was rather chilly at night.
"You sure? I mean if you're ok getting sick I won't push it."
Jazz sat back on his hands, watching the boy. Dylan huh? He sure was strange. Why was he so jumpy and distant? And why was he all alone on the streets?
"New enough. I had some things to deal with back home before I joined my leader here on Earth."
It was the truth. Clearing out some caches and securing his secret locations for his being away a long time. He didn't really care about the hideouts and homes he used. He didn't want anyone finding what was actually not very legal weapons.
"So Dylan... why are you on the streets? I might be know but I know enough to tell you're much too young to be on the streets and on your own."
Jazz wasn't trying to sound mean or anything. He was just genuinely curious as to why the boy was digging in a dumpster and pretending to "inspect" it. He was SpecOps, not a newspark.

Sick? Heh, that was a good one.
As Jazz contemplated how he was new enough, but smart enough to know Dylan was on the streets. Damn… Why did people always read him like a book? He took a deep breath and pushed the bangs of his hair away. Why did he care anyway? Dylan was just some random kid, he wasn’t anyone’s problem.
But Jazz hadn’t attempted to drag him back either. So he’d give him a bone.
“Because I’m running away and striking out on my own!” He explained more proudly than he probably should have. “I’ve spent five years in that stinkin’ program they put me in for what? I keep getting pushed around so I’m done.”
He then added rather triumphantly. “I figure by the time I’m eighteen I can enlist in the Autobots anyway. Make my own choices,” He explained. “Just got to hold out until then.”

"I hate to burst your bubble, but you can only go so far on the streets. We might be different species, but we have had out fair of homeless on Cybertron so the concept is the same. Do you have blankets, shelter? If not I can take you in. And you need access to a shower and good food."
Jazz smirked to Dylan.
"I might be new to Earth but I know enough to know all species require roughly the same things. Shelter, sustenance, cleanliness."
Jazz paused and pondered. How would he be able to convince Dylan to let him take the kid in? He didn't want to see the kid suffer. He was running away, he knew that feeling. He had tried once, failed.
"Look. I'm going to head back to my place. It's warm and comfortable. But if you like sleeping outside where it's infested with bugs and rats..."
Jazz shrugged and got to his feet. He started to turn away. He had to make plans for his task force team anyway. Dylan wanted to live on the streets so he would leave the boy to it.

Dylan huffed.
Why were adults always so good at reading him? Of course, he had shelter, enough…. It wasn’t anything to write home about but hey! He worked with what he had, right? And why did he have to bring up rats!? Ew. Not that with his past Dylan wasn’t used to plenty of that.
Taking a deep breath, he looked over his options. He could follow this nosy mech and get shelter for the night. Or he could keep scrounging for food. God, why did that have to be tempting? Still, he decided that one night wasn’t going to kill him - and he assured himself in his head it would be one night.
“Fine, but just one night,” Dylan finally replied. “But if I get even a whiff of that old mech, Ironhide coming around.” He said as he began to follow.

Jazz held up his hands. He wasn't going to trick the kid, but he also didn't want the kid to be outside in the cold.
"I won't tell Ironhide. I'm SpecOps. I'm good at keeping secrets."
He transformed and opened the door. The interior was warm and the seats were comfy.
"Get in. It'll be quicker this way and it's getting late. You need sleep."
Jazz was gentle about the whole thing.

Ok at least there was that.
Honestly, he didn’t mind Ironhide. But that mech was damn good at talking you into just about anything. Maybe it was the southern drawl, or maybe he was just too nice to deny, sometimes Dylan thought he hinged on both. “Wait you’re a spec ops bot? That’s sick!” He explained. “I used to think about doing that stuff. But I think I decided I’m gonna be a Wrecker instead!”
Sure, he hadn’t known of any humans who had done that yet. But there was a first time for everything and Dylan was stubborn.
Oh right, on one hand Dylan hesitated to get in the car, but on the other hand. It was frickin’ cold today - so he climbed in. “So what did you do in spec ops? Spy or something?” He asked turning into the usual kid with a billion questions

Jazz went to the place he was crashing at and let Dylan out. Once the kid was clear, Jazz transformed and stretched. It was actually cozy and inviting.
"I've got quite a few things already that would make a good bed for you."
He grabbed blankets and other items to make a nest bed. He didn't have a mattress that was human sized that he could give Dylan. However, he set the items down and then sat down.
"Would you like help? I can hold things better so you can see if it's good or not. From what I understand blankets and sheets are usually a lot bigger than a human's armspan."
Jazz smiled softly. He wasn't at all worried about his secret stashes being found. Jazz was exceptionally good about hiding things.
"And to answer your question about what I do... sometimes. But a lot of times I sabotage things."
Jazz smirked. He enjoyed what he did and he was EXTREMELY good at it.

Dylan nodded along.
Honestly, it wasn’t too bad, in fact compared to where he’d been sleeping it looked comfortable. So he got around to doing exactly what Jazz suggested, making a gesture of “I got this” with his hands. While he was doing that however, he listened to what Jazz had to say.
Sabatoge, huh? That was kind of interesting, if not something he hadn’t actually heard of. “Ohhh that sounds cool though. I sabotage stuff too, but mostly with my pranks,” he quipped. “I’m really good at pulling them.”
He then decided to broach another subject. “So what has you doing this exactly? Everyone’s got a reason… What are you gonna want out of me?”

"Kid I don't want anything from you. You need to learn not everyone is out to get you. I have a soft spot for the young, no matter the species. The young are the future."
It was the truth. Jazz didn't like the thought of a planet's future being snuffed out because the young were eliminated. He grabbed a cube of energon and sipped it. The fuel hitting his tanks felt good! Being a mech who did the messy stuff wasn't always fun. He sat in his chair, legs outstretched.
"So how come you don't want to find a nice family if you didn't like the one you were born into?"
Jazz was highly concerned for Dylan.
