Nick didn’t know if he was excited or annoyed about today.
On one hand, he’d only gotten grounded for one weekend for sneaking out. Which wasn’t bad for being caught by your dad at a street race. On the other? He also knew that what he was going to be put through on account of it was probably going to be tough. How did Autobots even teach their kids self defense? Would he get to use an ion blaster? How cool would that be?
Sure, Bee had taught him some self-defense before when he’d been rescued. But at the same time, he had to imagine if he wanted a full on session this was going to be a great deal more serious. And he told himself he had to take it seriously too, given the breakout and Decepticons still at large.
For all he knew he’d have to defend himself again sooner rather than later.
So while he waited out in the yard, he tried to practice what he remembered from before. One. Two. Jab. Uppercut. Honestly, it would work well on humans he figured but he could tell he still wasn’t punching quite hard enough. And he hadn’t even learned a proper kick yet. Taking a deep breath, he muttered to himself. “Frag it don’t make yourself look like an idiot out there.”

Bumblebee had the biggest processor ache you could imagine.
Everything had just gone straight to the Pit over the last few months. The Decepticons had broken out of GHOST jail, Nick had been kidnapped by Soundwave of all bots, and then when he was rescued what did Nick immediately attempt to do? Sneak out with Hashtag and Mo. Primus he just wanted to beat his head against a brick wall sometimes, but he just had to remind himself that he needed to be the responsible one. If not then things like this would keep happening, right? That and he needed to set a good example for the Terrans. If he cracked under all this pressure, then where would that leave them? Curse this big brother mentality kinda thing. It was the bane of being the hero at times too, but now there was the dad responsibility that he needed to take care of.
Wanting to take a brief moment for himself, the Autobot scout-in-hiding decided to take a walk around the perimeter to take in the warming air and stretch his legs a bit. It was a pretty nice day outside, and he could only wish he could enjoy the great outdoors a little bit more. Maybe one day when all this nonsense with GHOST was over with.
During his walk that's when he spotted Nick out in the field apparently practicing some of the self defense that Bee had previously taught him. It made him somewhat proud that the kid was putting what he'd learned to good use, but he definitely needed some pointers. Deciding to take it as a potential teaching moment, Bumblebee approached with a smug look on his face. "Training hard or hardly training at all?" He chuckled a bit, shaking his helm with a grin. "I'm here if you want some pointers, ya know."

Oh great, just the guy he wanted to see!
And had he just made a dad joke? Wow, that was probably the first time he’d heard one out of the mech but he guessed it came with the territory huh? Maybe calling him that for the first time had gotten to his head or something. Either way he gave a smirk back. “Oh, hey dad,” God that still sounded so weird after years of never having one. But a good weird. “Yeah, Mo and Robby were busy today so I actually kind of hoped you’d be up for a training session.” He explained. “The self-defense pointers are great. But I want to grow up to be just as good a fighter as my old mech, y’know?”
Waggling his eyebrows playfully he even added. “You know, the real cool stuff. Like how to shoot an ion canon, or how to incapacitate someone,” he then added. “I mean I know I’m a kid and all. But you got started early, so I bet I could too, right?” He added eagerly. Circling him and boxing at the air playfully as he spoke.

Primus he was never gonna get used to the dad thing.
It's not that he was completely against it or anything, but it just seemed so.. weird. Maybe it was that he was still getting used to it, or maybe there was a part of him that felt he really hadn't earned that title or something, but Bumblebee didn't actually know why it felt so strange to him. Maybe it was just as simple as it made him feel old, but considering he was already 4 million years old or so his version of old certainly did not match that of a human's. They lived such short lives, but Cybertronians had a life span that felt like they'd live forever sometimes. Heck, Ratchet was one of the oldest mechs he knew and he was certain there were even older bots out there.
"Look, Nick.. I didn't get a choice when I was made. The war had already started and I was just thrown straight into it. I guess you could call it learning the job on the fly, but you at least get to have time to learn." Bumblebee chuckled, stretching a bit. "Being a fighter's great and all, but self defense is something completely different. Sure you can fight to defend yourself, but the point isn't to completely wipe out the enemy. It's to protect yourself until you have the chance to book it." But Nick had wanted to be an actual fighter, hadn't he? It definitely concerned Bee because why would you want to fight as a choice, but if it's what he wanted..
"Why don't you show me what you've got by attacking the air?"

Nick… Hadn’t thought of it that way before.
When he thought of his dad, he pictured the Autobot badass. The guy who had gone toe-to-toe with a Decepticon. Who’d come charging in to save him when he was kidnapped by Soundwave, despite being in hiding. He hadn’t pictured the young Bot who had been born into a war. But was staunchly reminded of why kids like him existed now… A generation whose adoptive family’s has wanted normalcy.
After a moment, he found a way to put his thoughts into words. “I never… I mean I guess I never thought about that. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’d actually, want to go to war or anything…” Nick explained. He wasn’t the soldier type, not really anyway. “But I guess some part of me has seen what you can do now… And I know when you’re out of hiding, there’s going to be expectations for me to be as much of a badass too.”
After all, his dad was famous, Alex help make that clear with his absolute hero worship. But thankfully, Nick was still a kid, not even fifteen, it was hardly like he had to really worry about those expectations… And yet there was still the little part of him who had been abandoned by his parents… That wanted to prove he was worthy of being taken in by Bumblee like he had…
That he wasn’t a mistake.
When he finally asked him to show him some of his moves. Nick got nervous, but still squared up. “Oh I learned some cool stuff! I was watching some online videos in-between watching your stuff!” Nick said with exuberance. “Here watch this.”
While Nick wasn’t… Perfect, he managed to throw a few nice punches at the air. And show a bit of grace. For a kid who looked like he was basically flailing and trying to copy without much practice. It was the roundhouse kick he’d been practicing that made him again spin around and fall on his butt. Damn. Rubbing the back of his neck, he added. “Uhhhh that last move is a work in progress,” He said as he stood up to brush himself off. “So what do you think?”

So Nick thought that others were going to have such expectations of him once Bee was finally able to step out of hiding for good? It wasn’t something he had considered, but he honestly didn’t think the boy had anything to worry about. Bee was just a scout, and not someone like Optimus Prime or Megatron. Then he could see expectations being held for their offspring. Though Bee was a fantastic scout which is why he hadn’t been caught in 15 years, but that was beside the point.
“What, you mean that you be as good a scout that I am? Nick, no one’s expecting you to be me. They’re expecting you to just be yourself, though picking up a few things definitely doesn’t hurt.”
Bumblebee watched as Nick began to demonstrate all the techniques that he had learned online and learned from the Autobot himself. Not his best, but he had to start somewhere he supposed. He almost winced, but Nick seemed to be alright. “A good start, but definitely have some room to improve. Why don’t I give you some pointers?”
The yellow mech waved his servo for signal for Nick to move out of the way so Bee had enough room to work with, taking up a fighting stance. “It’s important that when you fight you have a starting point so you can balance yourself. If you don’t it’s gonna be way too easy for your opponent to knock you down. You don’t want your legs too far apart that it creates an opening, but you don’t want them too close together that it limits your movement. Gotta find a happy medium.”

Nick looked at Bee like he was crazy.
As good a scout? That was one thing to consider yes, but did Bee really think that little of his contributions to the Autobots? All the legendary battles he fought in? Being one of Optimus’ most trusted and dependable Autobot’s? “Dad, I’m going to be real with you. You have a fanbase for a reason. You’re not just a scout you’re a legend,” Nick said, he rarely nerded out about his dad, but still. “People have written masters thesis on you, including your scouting abilities and friendship with Spike. Which Ironhide says he credits to the formation of the program that brought us together.”
He pointed to Bee. “They may want me to be myself and all that. But don’t let me ever hear you downplay how big a badass you are again, OK?”
Nick did take right to listening as Bumblebee started his lesson though. He was at attention right away, wanting to give the scout his full undivided attention thst was for sure, after all if he didn’t what was the point? Nick looked at his stance carefully and attempted to get into a similar stance… Which wasn’t bad for a first timer as usual but could still use some work.
“Oh yeah… I think I get it now,” Nick perked up. “Kind of like in those old kung-fu movies we watched at the Drive-In the other week.”

And just like that Bumblebee was annoyed, narrowing his optics a bit. How did Nick manage to translate what he'd said into talking bad about himself? All he'd suggested was that the kid maybe wanted to be as good of a scout as he was. That wasn't insulting his own career cause duh he was the best. The only way you could do better was by being a saboteur like Jazz or even Punch by playing the other side by screwing with them in the best ways possible; sometimes even the funniest.
Crossing his arms tightly, he spoke. "Nick, that wasn't what I was suggesting at all and you know that. I appreciate the compliments and all, but I already know I'm the best scout there is. All I said was that you wanted to be on my level."
Regardless there was still impromptu training that needed to happen, and Nick immediately jumping to the thought of kung-fu movies made the scout sigh. "Yeah.. Just like that. Listen, Nick, as cool as those movies are they're not the real thing. Real fights just don't happen that way, so you gotta learn from an actual fighter and not just Bruce Lee or whoever. Anyway, just watch me." Taking a second to relax himself, Bumblebee threw a series of punches and kicks, each with a fluid movement but none striking the air in the same way. Just for show, Bumblebee preformed that roundhouse kick that Nick was attempting, spinning entirely on the front of his pede and using that as his center of gravity.
"Well? How 'bout that?"

Nick blushed.
He actually... Hadn't realized it had been what Bee meant. But at the same time, his brain wasn't always wired the same way others were, right? Though he wouldn't correct Bee about it, after all, his dad did his best to get him and he knew it. "Sorry dad, I didn't mean it like that either," He nudged the Bot playfully. "I'll keep it in mind next time... Promise."
Well, that's fair, he guessed. As cool as it would be to learn from Bruce Lee, how many people could say they learned to fight from a legendary Autobot either? And as usual, his dad was impressive as hell. Enough so that Nick could feel his eyes widen in surprise a little. "That was wicked, you really know your stuff," He replied. Taking a deep breath, he put up his own fists. "OK... OK let me give it a shot, I think..."
This time, when Nick tried it was a little more graceful. Though hardly on Bumblebee's level, and a bit more on the novice side. And definitely without the flair - since he didn't have any of that yet. "I feel like I just can't throw a hard enough punch sometimes," Nick added. "I really should be a bit more physical."

Well if nothing else at least Nick was focusing on what Bumblebee was trying to teach.
He knew that a single demonstration wasn't going to be enough to make a vast improvement. That would come with some practice, but at least Bumblebee could point out things that the kid was doing wrong. It was a start, but just that one punch Nick threw was certainly better than it had been previously. Nick did have a point when he said that he needed something a big more physical when it came to practicing fighting. Maybe he just needed something to 'fight'. "I could say we could spar, but I'd rather you not break every bone in your body." Bee chuckled a bit, failing to resist the urge to tease.
"Maybe we could find a punching bag for you or even make something. I know the Terrans use the haystacks, but that might be a little hard for you."

Nick giggled.
One of those young kid giggles he rarely got to do. But around Bee, it was much easier. He could be a kid again, instead of having to act so tough, or adult all the time. Still, he couldn't help but tap his fist against Bumblebee's ankle and tease back. "Oh come on, old mech! I could take you, and you know it," He replied. Putting his hands on his hips with a cocky smirk. "I bet if you brought your holoform out here I could wipe the floor with you."
Though he did tap his chin in thought at what Bumblebee said next. Haystacks? The punching bag definitely made the most sense of the two. "Or a punching bag is good too," He added lightly. "I think I actually brought one from my old place. Haven't used it though, I can go get it." He added. "I just never really used it until now."

It was nice to hear Nick laugh all things considering. Made him feel somewhat proud that he'd accomplished that. Bee still didn't know if that was the parenting thing trying to kick in or if it was just a general good feeling, but he figured it was something he'd learn as time went on. Things were still new and felt strange to him all the same.
"Yeah we'll see about that.. after you get some more training practice." Bumblebee knew he'd be victorious over Nick regardless of whether he used his holoform or not given what the kid had displayed so far, but all in due time. Once Nick had a little more experience under his belt then it'd be time to fight the sensei so to speak. Doing so now would only end in awkward defeat, and it wouldn't be Bumblebee knocked on his aft either. He was a little surprised when Nick mentioned that he thought he'd brought a punching bag with him. It'd certainly be easier to use than a stack of hay, plus the hay would just fall apart after awhile. The punching bag would at least last a little longer and would be good exercise not just for him but for the human members of the Malto family too.
Well.. provided Jawbreaker didn't accidentally break it. Poor guy. Then again, things could always be replaced.
"Well, why don't we find that punching bag then and get it set up somewhere? I think that'd be a much better idea than the hay."

After of course!
Nick did notice the way Bee seemed to look at him though. Had he made him proud? Nick hoped so. But he did perk up a bit at that, giggling again. “Sure I’ll do some more training,” Nick replied. “But I’m holding you to that. It’ll be so cool to learn more from you. Like what better teacher could I have?”
Right, finding the punching bag.
Nick held up a finger and started into the barn, though after a minute he came out. He carried it with a little difficulty, having forgotten just how heavy it was. “Told you I had it somewhere!” He grinned sheepishly. “Where do you think we can hang it? Maybe on a tree?”

What better teacher could he have?
"Well there's Optimus, Elita, Grimlock.." Bumblebee counted a digit for each name he mentioned before grinning. "Guess you'll just have to settle for me. At least I won't put you through rigorous training, unless you want that but I think you'll probably be wanting to call it quits after the first hour or so." At least the Terrans probably would. They were all about having fun and not so much doing the training, but every now and again he could actually get them to cooperate. The wonders of being a child in a time without war, or without an officially named one going on between the Autobots and Decepticons.
He watched as Nick left to go search for that punching bag, raising an optic ridge as the kid seemed to be struggling to carry it a bit yet seemed like he was doing just fine. "I guess a tree would be good, but uh.. you need some help there? Looks like you're about to drop if you carry that thing for too much longer."
