Nick wasn't sure if he was making a mistake.
He and Bumblebee had been friends for a bit now. They hung out, talked about stuff, and he was a pretty cool guy to hang around with now that he was kind of on his own. But he also knew that Bumblebee was supposed to be keeping a low profile and he didn't know if inviting him to a street race was something that helped that. That said, it was too late now, given he'd gone out of his way to invite Bumblebee and was now hanging out with a few kids from the less-savory part of town.
Truth be told, Nick probably shouldn't have been hanging out with them.
They were tougher, and a fair bit skeevy. But at the same time, Nick could claim them as "friends" or at least "friendly" given they had mutuals that put them together. Would he hang out with them on a regular basis? Not really. But right now, he was especially thinking about how much he'd love to see the smug look wiped off a few of their faces. "Where's your boy, Nicky?" One, a beefier guy who wasn't among his friends and a bit older huffed. "I thought you'd show up together."
Right, how did he cover that he was a busy mech? Well, that was easy he guessed. Leaning against a tree on the road they were waiting at, he simply replied. "He'll be here, relax," He joked. "Don't be in such a hurry to lose."

Two minutes left until the designated meeting time. Bumblebee was definitely not running late at all.
...Okay he was definitely running late. He couldn't help it that he needed to help the Terrans with some last minute things and then had to fight traffic. How humans seemed to have this thing with blocking all known routes astounded Bumblebee and aggravated him all at the same time. Didn't these people have somewhere to be?! Sure emergencies were a thing and that blocked intersections, but what were they stopping to just stare at whatever was happening? Go meant go, people! Bumblebee had places to be and he couldn't just transform and walk around. Well, he could but that would defeat the entire purpose of staying under cover and out of G.H.O.S.T's crosshairs. While he knew going on this race with Nick might have been a bad idea, he just couldn't say no. Twitch and Thrash would be alright for the moment, and he needed to get out and stretch his wheels too.
One minute remaining and Bee was finally pulling on up to where Nick was waiting with a few other people. Deciding to make an entrance as his holoform sat in the driver's seat, Bumblebee put the pedal to the metal before swerving in front of all of them to make a completely dramatic stop. "Hey Nick. Looks like I made it in time."

Nick smirked at Bee’s arrival, most definitely loving the dramatic entrance.
He sneered at his friends with an almost “I told you so.” Look. Grinning from ear-to-ear he leaned against Bumblebee’s alt mode and held up a fist to Bee. Could holoforms even fist bump? He didn’t know, but he didn’t care as one of the older friends gave it a once over. ”Sweet, an X-12 limited edition,” he whistled. ”Your friend has taste, Nicky. What’s up, I’m Bones.”
As Bones continued to look him over Nick noted. “Good to see you… Ben,” he came up with some human name on the spot. Before whispering. “Don’t worry, dude looks scary but he’s a teddy bear. Once you get past his record.”
As Bones continued to look him up and down, he stopped by the window and looked at the holoform calmly. “I was happy to hear Nicky made a more uh… Responsible adult friend,” he said responsible with air quotes. “I was ready to break Dave’s ugly ass face when I heard he left last week….”
Nick’s eyes shot up - mortified as he hadn’t actually gotten around to telling Bee about that yet. And he hadn’t intended to get him mixed up in it. Still he quickly got into the passengers seat and gave his “friend” the side-eye. “We’re not talking about our personal lives, Bones,” he insisted. “We’re here to kick your but from here to the state line in a race.”
Bones smirked. ”Kid got some faith in ye. But it’ll take more than a fancy ride to impress me.”

Ben?
Oh! That was the name Nick was giving his holoform for the purposes of this race. Made sense, but Bee had to play the part in order to convince this kid that he was definitely a normal human man and not Cybertronian. As Nick fistbumped him, he would definitely feel the difference between a normal human and a holoform. Made of solid light, there was no temperature let alone the feeling of skin. It was solid, and yet strangely smooth; almost tingly in a way. He whispered back to Nick, listening to what he had to say. "No worries. I'm not worried about this guy at all. I could drive circles around him no problem."
But then the kid came over, talking to him about Nick's apparent history with less than responsible adults. At first Bumblebee didn't even question it outside of his holoform raising an eyebrow, but when Nick's expression quickly changed from cheerful to mortified Bumblebee knew something was up. He wanted to know more about what that comment was all about, but he'd have to wait until the two of them were in a more private setting in the form of his human friend hopping into the Autobot's passenger seat. Once Nick climbed in and was all settled, Bumblebee once more listened to the smack talk between the two before his holoform turned toward the human known simply as Bones.
Also.. why was he called 'Bones'?
"Oh this 'fancy ride' will leave you in the dust before you can even bat an eye. Now are we racing, or is this as fast as things get?"

Nick felt a little tingle that was for sure.
But he couldn’t help but smirk at Bee’s confidence. Honestly, he didn’t have any doubt he’d win either. If anything he was betting on it, and maybe collecting the prize money to help pay some bills this month. But he definitely wasn’t going to tell Bumblebee that. Even as he definitely noticed Bee’s change in demeanor when Nick had reacted to that comment.
Bumblebee had enough to worry about.
”Oh feisty, I like you already. Too bad you have to race this,” Bones patted a souped-up Ferrari. Albeit an older model, but one that the man was very proud of. ”It’s cool though, you’re new. I’ll go easy on ya. Just don’t go crying when you lose, OK? I hate seeing people cry.”
Nick rolled his eyes. While Bones was good, he wasn’t jumping a train without batting an optic ridge good. “As long as you promise the same thing!” He stuck his tongue out as someone came up to signal and Bones got in. “I can’t wait to see the look on his face when we win this. It’s gonna be priceless.” He chuckled as the man started the countdown.
“Don’t be too hard on him though. I feel a little bad crushing his dreams.” He joked.

Oh there was no way Bumblebee was going to lose this race. Humans hadn't built the car that could outrun him, and he was fairly certain one of the only Cybertronians that could pass him up was Blurr himself. The guy was literally built for speed, both on wheels and his manner of speech. He almost had to laugh when the Bones kid insisted that Bumblebee would be crying when he lost.
Dream on.
"Only one that's going to be crying is you when you get left in the dust. My dust." Bumblebee didn't need the kid to go easy on him. If anything, Bee probably needed to go easy on him but that would take the fun right out of the race. What point was there to racing if you were going to showboat by slowing down and then potentially lose because of it. Didn't the humans have a story about that? Something something tortoise and hair? Wait no. Hare. It was almost funny that even Nick was suggesting that Bumblebee take it easy on Bones as well.
"Sorry, Nick. Nothing personal against your friend here but I'm about to wipe the floor with him. He'll be spinning in circles for weeks by the time I finish this race." Still, there was that matter of discussing the Dave thing with Nick and asking what that was all about. He'd wait until the race began and he was well ahead of Bones, but it was hard not to ask about it now.

Nick shrugged, he guessed it wouldn’t be too bad to take Bones down a couple of notches.
After all, Bones wasn’t the humblest guy. He was nice enough, but he did have an ego, a really big ego at that. It made him fun to be around because he was rich and liked to show off, but still… “I guess it was worth a try. Rest in peace his ego I guess,” he joked as he leaned back and looked over at Bones. Then the girl counting down. “See you at the finish line!”
”First one to the center of town and back wins!” Bones replied as he punched it as the girl finished counting.
Nick smirked, ready for this to get real. But he had undoubtedly noticed somewhat of a shift in Bee. He hadn’t forgotten how he’d looked when Bones had mentioned Dave. What was going through his processor? Was he onto the whole thing? Honestly, Nick didn’t know.
Grinning ear-to-ear, he tried his best to ignore that sinking feeling in his head. “His face is gonna be so priceless.” He joked.

First one to the center of town and back? Easy! Bumblebee had zero doubts that he'd have any problems with this race, and he'd won drag races much more difficult than this.
As the girl counted down and reached zero, The Autobot put the pedal to the metal, tires screeching as he took off like a rocket. A lot of his focus was placed on this race, determined to win not just for Nick but also to rub it in this kid's face. He wanted to mess with the best? He was about to regret it. However, there was still more on his processor, and as Bee screamed down the streets of Witwicky he felt maybe this was the best chance that he would get. With the holoform's eyes focused on the race, Bumblebee thought long and hard of how he wanted to approach this. Maybe it was something simple, but maybe it wasn't either. It was hard to say, but there was only one way he was gonna find out.
"Yeah. I can't wait to wipe that smirk of his face. So.. Nick. I have a question for you. This Dave guy Bones was talking about.. was he talking about your uncle?" Nick had previously mentioned an Uncle Dave once before. Were these two Daves one in the same?

Nick grinned and did a little finger wave back at Bones.
Was it slightly immature? Probably, but when would he get the chance to do this again? After all, he was not even able to get his permit yet. Smirking with satisfaction as he leaned back - he looked over at his holoform. “Oh did you see the look on his face? He’s so pissed,” he joked to Bumblebee. “I bet he’s going to have a whole Facebook post about how mad he is.”
His face froze when Bumblebee asked about Dave.
Licking his lip slightly, he turned away. Not the talk he wanted to have right now, but he guessed Bones’ big mouth has decided that for him now hadn’t it? Finally breathing a little he nodded. “I was going to tell you, I swear but it’s not a big deal,” Nick tried to insist. “He left the deed to the farm for me. And I have a job already… I mean it doesn’t pay all the bills. But it pays most of them. The lights haven’t gone out on me yet.”
Seemingly satisfied he was right, Nick added. “Besides, it’s not like it’s the first time someone bailed on me,” he explained. “He was staring down the bottle enough as is.”
Glancing up, his eyes noticed a car slightly starting to gain in the rearview mirror. A little impressed, Nick looked over his shoulder. “He’s really pushing his car to its limit, isn’t he?”

A Facebook rage video. Now that was something Bumblebee would need to find and watch after this race for sure. Just another means of rubbing it in the kid's face that he wasn't as hot as he thought he was, and defeat was something he needed experience not just to grow, but to learn he wasn't all that and a bag of chips as the humans said. "Yeah, you're definitely gonna have to send me that video."
However, the conversation took a turn toward something a bit more serious as Bumblebee questioned Nick about what Bones had to say. He wasn't quite sure what to expect as he asked his question, but what did come out stunned the Autobot as he just barely managed to keep himself from slamming on the breaks. Nick had been living alone?! This whole time?! He was so young that he couldn't possibly imagine living alone like this could be legal by human standards. If the government found out he was likely going to be taken away to some orphanage or something, that or they'd track down his family if he had any to be found. He sighed deeply, trying to find the words. "Nick.." He sounded both frustrated but concerned at the same time. "That's not something you should lie about. You're just a kid and even if you're working a job to pay bills, you're too young to be living alone. You really don't have anyone who can help you?"
It wasn't his job to decide whether or not Nick had good family or not, but for him to have been abandoned at least once.. potentially twice. It wasn't okay. It wasn't right! It made Bumblebee angry just thinking about it. "We can talk more about it later, but promise not to hide something like that from me again, alright?"
Either way, they still had a race to win and Bones was starting to catch up. "Yeah you're right. Time to make Bones eat dust." Bumblebee accelerated once more, swerving into a drift as he rounded a corner. There was no way he was gonna lose this.

Nick had been about to agree when Bumblebee spoke up.
He was kind of… Shocked? Had Bumblebee just expressed that much concern? Honestly, he hadn’t been prepared for someone to go off like that. Nick hadn’t really been parented before, he’d never had anyone freak out. After a moment he decided to finally reply. “I just… Look Bee, I’m fifteen. No one wants someone that old,” he explained. “I’d be bounced around in foster care, maybe even be taken out of the town. Or out of state. I grew up in Pennsylvania. This is my home… Both my dad and uncle grew up in foster care. I know how it works.”
It didn’t always feel like home, but it was his home all the same. “I figured if you ever found out we could just trade secrets anyway. No one knows who you are, no one knows what I’m doing,” he explained honestly. “I’m sorry… I didn’t know you’d be so concerned. I won’t lie again I promise.”
Though he wasn’t sure how to take this anyway… Bumblebee’s concern really had come as a complete blindside he wasn’t expecting.
So when he agreed to let Bones eat his dust. Well at least he knew he could get that at this point. He could see the other car pushing just a little harder damn… Bones was persistent wasn’t he? “He’s crazy. His car’s gonna fall apart.” He chuckled.

Nick really did know how this whole thing went down, didn't he?
Bumblebee wasn't really sure how to answer him or what to even say to make the situation better. He'd never really had the luxury of being a sparkling himself as he'd pretty much been thrown into the war and was just expected to know what he needed to get done. He didn't know what it was like for a kid to not have the guidance of a parental unit and just what happened to them at that point. He was proud that Nick was at least trying to keep it from happening by getting a job and such, but he shouldn't need to lie about that either. Everyone deserved to have a happy family, and the fact that Nick wasn't getting that at all didn't sit right with Bumblebee.
The problem was he honestly did not know what to do about it. There had to be something, but what?
"Trust me, people know who I am.. just not in this form. They're still expecting the bug, but that's not me anymore. Listen, Nick.. of course I would be concerned. You're my friend, and that's definitely not something you should have to deal with. You should have people around you willing to help, and it's not fair that you don't. I wish there was more I could do to help, but promise you won't lie to me or anyone else about something of that magnitude. You can't do everything on your own. You need to let others help you, me included."
Though there was a race they needed to win too. The mere thought of Bones' car falling apart both made Bee laugh and terrified him at the same time. As long as it wasn't another Cybertronian.. "Well he's about to find out the hard way why I'm the one who can't be defeated in a race. Only way he's going to win is if his car suddenly turns out to be Blurr, and I'm pretty sure it isn't." Straightening out after the long drift, Bumblebee sped back up before powering on his energon boosters. "Might wanna hang on to something, Nick."
Once they were fired up, Bee rocketed forward leaving a trail of blue energy flickering behind him.

Let others help him?
That was hard for Nick. He had spent a long time raising himself, with Dave’s help once in a while. Dave had been so hands-off when it came to raising him that sometimes Nick felt a bit depressed. He had wanted a closer relationship but he often wondered if he was worth it. Maybe that was why so many people had walked away….
But all the same, he did reply. “I won’t lie to you again, I promise,” Nick finally replied. “I just didn’t know what else I could do… I just. I’m burnt out on people giving up on me I guess.”
Ohhh… Yeah he hadn’t thought of any Cybertronian tech Bee had. But he definitely held on tight, definitely prepared or so he thought. He literally screamed as he catapulted forward, but a scream of joy. “Dude I can get used to this!” He shouted. “Poor Bones is going to never live this down.”

Good. Bumblebee could settle for Nick promising not to lie about important things like that again. As long as Nick kept his word, that was good enough for Bumblebee.
"Now wait a minute, Nick. Who said I was giving up on you? I think you're jumping to conclusions that everyone's going to just abandon you, but you're not even giving them a chance to prove that they won't. Listen to me, I'm not going to just bail on you. I've got my missions and duties, true, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to just walk out of your life. Give me a little more credit than that." While there was a joking tone in Bumblebee's words, he was serious all the same. He hated that the kid felt like that, but how was he ever supposed to form meaningful relationships if he never gave others a chance? There were already enough Cybertronians out there that did that, and it seemed that humans were the same in that regard.
Either way there was still a race to win and Bumblebee was granting himself a giant lead with the use of his energon boosters. He was flying down the streets of Witwicky, just nearing the turning point to bring him to the center of the town. If he wanted to have the best chance at turning, he was going to have to slow the scrap down for a bit otherwise he was going to heavily spin out and Bones would get that advantage over him.. not that Bee couldn't easily retake the lead. "There's no way he's coming back from this. We're at the halfway point now, so keep holding onto while I make this turn!" Swinging around into a hard drift, Bumblebee's tires screeched as he took the hard turn to head straight back into town. Once he finished the turn and straightened himself back out he sped back up without the boosters.
