The sound of a rather oversized alarm clock filled the young Cybertronian’s quarters, alerting her to it being about 5:30 in the morning. Dawn was barely breaking over the horizon and Autobot City was still dark from the night. Yet, that didn’t stop one rather hyperactive little bot.
Reaching over, Whirl gave the snooze button a light tap to turn it off, a grin already on her face as she hopped off her recharge berth and onto her feet. Class wasn’t in session that day, but the blue helibot was eager to get her day started. She intended to do a little of her own independent studying focusing towards patrols and recognizing disaster or danger, as well as to give her newly scanned forms more practice. Naturally, she always preferred her helicopter form, but with the Mul-T-Cog badges her and her fellow recruits had obtained their new forms were expected. She had two for herself: a police car and a raptor form. But, she had yet to give them much practice or use, and with no class going on this seemed the perfect opportunity to make use of them. So, Whirl was bright eyed and bushy tailed, rushing over to get herself ready for the day. After all, an officer always had to look their best even if she didn’t technically wear a uniform. Nonetheless, she didn’t want to look sloppy or like she didn’t take her job seriously, so she made sure to take extra care to do so before she ever went anywhere for the day. Once satisfied, the little femme skipped her way out of her quarters and outside the academy.
Autobot City may not be particularly active during these hours, but an early start meant more time she could practice.
Once she took the first steps out into the lightening dawn, Whirl’s grin seemed to only broaden. “Alright, time to do some training!” Declaring in a rather overly loud excited tone, the young femme soon transformed into her first vehicle of choice for the day: her police car form, revving her engine a few times to get a feel for it before driving off into the city. Surely there had to be something going on at this hour.

The laboratories in Autobot City were vast, and exceedingly well-equipped. And, one of the many benefits of having an intelligent being as your city was that you could be easily connected to the sum total data of the world, and have a conversational partner at the same time. Skyfire had not entered a regeneration chamber, but had instead been in a lab he was sharing, tinkering with one of his planetary probes - specifically, he was trying to shield it against extreme cold and pressure, while also bumping up its radiation sensor's power and sensitivity. If he could take this up to the pole, he could fire it down and hope to come up with the data he was looking for - the data all previous probes had failed to produce.
Just after dawn, as he was finally making the final (and most delicate) adjustments, a vehicle whizzed past the lab at high speed. The bot himself didn't shake, but the probe did, and he had to pull back his soldering iron in order not to damage any of the major components. He put the tool back in its cradle and powered it down, deciding that finding whoever it was that interrupted him from his work was a higher priority. Conspiracy theories could be resolved later - whoever that was needed a lesson in safe driving now.
He transformed into his sizable jet altmode as he stepped out the door of the lab, flying down the street after the person who'd shaken his work (staying carefully subsonic so as not to do the same to others). He saw what looked like a small police vehicle without a driver. When he'd outpaced Whirl, Skyfire transformed back to robot mode as he landed on his feet, glaring down at the small vehicle (relative to himself) with his arms folded over his chestplate. He said nothing as he stood blocking the street with his bulk, waiting for the other to transform to robot mode.

In all her eagerness to get the day started, Whirl had given little thought to her usual strict protocols. She had ignored concerns for Earth’s road laws, including its speed limits, racing through some of the empty streets with little care in the world. The young femme had a one track mind that morning, a one track thought that soon found her in unexpected trouble. Barely away from the academy, a sizable jet came into view of her mirrors causing the young femme to adjust them slightly. The individual flew low and slow enough not to cause any disturbance, but fast enough they flew past her in no time. Another early riser like herself most likely. Whirl was far from the only one awake at this early hour after all, passing a few others roaming the streets as she sped along the city streets. So, she had not merely continued on with her own morning until a few minutes later the very same jet had transformed into a rather impressive mech of large stature, causing her to gasp and quickly slam on her brakes to avoid ramming into Skyfire’s legs. For a few moments, Whirl sat idle where she had skidded to a stop, processing the surprise for a moment as she observed the mech in her vehicle form. Why would the bot have landed in the road like that? Especially when she could have hurt him or vice versa, or both even… “ Hey! I could have crashed into you you know!” Whirl soon transformed to her robot mode, her voice full of surprise and concern more than anger and irritation. Said form also seemed to show quite the different vehicle kibble than what she had transformed from. And standing there staring up at the scientist, Whirl’s size was by far smaller due to her young age but seemed no where near intimidated by their size differences. Rather, she seemed confused and in wonder, trying to process why the Autobot before her had taken the risk of landing in the middle of the street that could have easily turned disastrous if she hadn’t stopped in time. “ So what’s the deal? Landing in the street like that, it’s just asking for a wide spread accident or worse!” She tried to point out, seeming oblivious to her own rather dangerous driving previously. But surely the red and white bot would have some explanation other than sheer recklessness, plus of why he seemed so stern given the expression he was sporting. Tags: Skyfire

Skyfire looked down at Whirl quizzically - her tone indicated that she didn't realize just how disruptive her actions had been to those nearby. He noticed that there was something strange about her transformation process, but that was her personal situation, not the problem that had pushed him out of his laboratory in the morning. His optics narrowed slightly and spoke without much emotional depth from his vocoder.
"Yes, you could easily have collided with me. Your speed was excessive. Frankly speaking, my effort to outpace you meant that I had to break airspeed limits for low-altitude flight in Autobot City. That means you were traveling at an incredibly unsafe speed."
He shook his head and eased up a bit, though he pointed all the way up toward his lab. They'd both been there only moments before, but it was a good distance away - an indication of her reckless speed. "I was working on an experiment in one of the labs you rolled past, which was interrupted by the sound and vibration of your little joyride. If we checked Metroplex's sensors, I'm sure he'd he would show both your extreme speed and the vibrations you've caused. While my experiment may have been the most sensitive thing you drove past, you easily could have shaken someone out of a regen cycle. Not to mention that, had there been a human here - especially a human child, you would have been unable to decelerate to a safe speed in time."
He looked at her, his frustration still present about the way she'd given him lip. "Since your vehicle mode resembles an Earth police vehicle, I suppose you'd be very unhappy were I to inform Prowl or Bluestreak about your trip. If you wish to run flat-out, there are safe places to do that where people may well encourage you to push into overdrive. Out in the salt flats, or on a racetrack, for instance. This is neither a safe nor acceptable place for it."
Oh yes, he was willing to push that button. He knew that several of the Autobots had started work as Rescuebots or Protectobots, training the next generation of protectors and guardians for this world. And if she was going to become one of them, Whirl was going to need to learn some self-control.

"Oh..."
Whirl's response was one of surprise, and disappointment in herself. Had she really been so reckless? Doing a check of her internal speedometer much to her horror she had in fact been going well above the speed limits the city had in place, making her spark shrink with appallment. How could she have let herself get into that state? She knew better, way better. She was always the one telling her teammates to never break the laws and speed rules, to always be aware whenever driving or trying to stop them from doing exactly this. Whirl couldn't help feeling the deep disappointment and wouldn't have blamed the large mech for reporting her actions. How could she expect to lecture her fellow students when her one track mind had gotten her in this situation.
"I apologize, you're right. I shouldn't have been driving so recklessly." Whirl apologized profusely, making no attempts to make excuses. Hot Shot probably would, maybe even Wedge in this situation. "I was so excited about my new form I was eager to give it a test run, so I wasn't thinking right. If you have to report me I understand. I know better, and I normally am not like this." Whirl explained honestly while also admitting her mistake. At least she could admit that, and half expected the large mech to do just that. If it meant she would have to do additional lessons or punishment she would take it to remind herself to never do such a thing again.
'Only for emergencies Whirl! you're better than this!' She internally scolded herself.

Skyfire degaussed his vocoder in an approximation of a heavy sigh when the smaller bot reassessed her sensor readouts. He didn't understand how so many of the young bots had their consciousness so disconnected from their hard sensors. Did their logic circuits function differently, somehow? Perhaps it had to do with the fact that Skyfire was made for a purpose and his body had been cast to give him optimal success in that role. That he had been able to adapt to the needs of being a soldier and ground scientist was only a matter of luck. She'd commented on a new form - that told him a great deal. She was of a much younger generation than him, certainly a type that was protoformed rather than purpose-built according to the wisdom of Elders.
She went from petulant to genuinely ashamed and scared of him. He didn't know whether he quite accepted her answer, but she deserved a second chance. His voice softened a bit. "I will not make an official report, because I believe that you will make an effort. What I will do is reach out to one of your instructors personally and ask them to train you to mind your sensor output at all times. They will be able to query Metroplex for his sensor readings, should they feel a need, but I will not encourage it."
He wasn't exactly letting it go, but he also wasn't getting her in any official trouble. A remark between friends wouldn't be allowed to put a black mark on her record; but a word in the right audio receptor might help those who were teaching her to make certain that she stayed on the right track. He thought for a moment - well, actually, he was querying deep logic circuits whose contents were normally compressed. He nodded again when he had the information. "There is a racetrack and drag strip in the northwest section of the city. To my knowledge, there is no scheduled event today. I strongly advise that you test your abilities there in a safe and responsible environment. That way, you can exercise your top speeds and compare your internal sensorium to external sensors to add objectivity to your sensation of the world around you. If you find that there is a need to have a restrictor plate temporarily added to your engine for the safety of yourself and others, I am absolutely certain that Ratchet can do so. If I am incorrect, and you find that there is an event, you may tell Optimus, or whoever is running it, that I am sponsoring your entry, and will make the appropriate ante in energon. You have certainly proven that you are capable of traveling at significant ground speed. You should test your braking and cornering there - for your own safety as much as those around you."
He wasn't upset at the fact that she was fast. If she was going to be in law enforcement, she had to be. There were times, places, and valid reasons to go flat-out - this was none of them. Only the development of good judgment on her part would prevent episodes like this from happening again. No one had been hurt, and his experiment had only been slightly shaken. She could learn better. She would learn better.

To say the least, Whirl had expected much worse than just a verbal rebuke by the older Autobot. Yet, she couldn’t also help but feeling relief. At best, she would most likely get a scolding from Chase for not being more aware and taking in the laws of the road into account, and Heatwave from just being outright reckless. Whirl didn’t expect a permanent strike to her record, but she knew better than most that this would result in some form of disciplinary action.
She could live with a scolding and punishment. Just as long as she wasn’t forbidden to still train as a recruit.
When Skyfire proposed the race track not far from there, Whirl couldn’t help but facepalm herself. The race track! How did she not think of that before! She couldn’t name the number of times she had found Hotshot, Wedge, and Hoist over at the track just for a bit of competition and having an extra set of optics when her fellow recruits butted heads. “No, you’re right, I should have considered that sooner. Like I said, my excitement got the better of me, so I was not thinking straight.” The helibot admitted once more. Even Whirl could admit when her hyperactive excitement could get the better of her. She was fully aware of how overboard she could be, and usually could rein it in long enough to think logically. But, this was one time this was far from the case. “But I think I should be fine. Lots of bots use the track outside it’s hours of use anyhow, better than their street racing all the time.” Whirl assured the red and white shuttle, her smile quickly returning, “And I’m sure with a little practice I’ll adjust my sensors well enough. I’m more attuned to aerial awareness with regards to my sensors than the ground, just will take a bit of adjusting.”
Skyfire was not wrong in that regard. It had not been long when she had taken a ground form, two if one wanted to get technical. But her raptor form afforded her a different matter altogether. But, some practice with being able to naturally adjust her sensors and the awareness would do her some good. “I’m Whirl by the way, and again my deepest apologies for being a nuisance. It won’t happen again, not unless it’s an emergency.” She introduced herself properly. Least she could do that much.

Thankfully, Whirl's initial petulance hadn't returned. She'd obviously realized she made a mistake - and that Skyfire was being kind because she hadn't harmed anyone and was going to make an effort to do better. He nodded when she agreed he was right, but didn't remark on her emotional state.
"Agreed, disorganized street racing is highly unsafe, both to the racers and any bystanders."
Skyfire's tone made it clear - he didn't care about the fact that it was illegal; law for law's sake was a though he'd given up on Earth. Back on Cybertron in the Golden Age, all laws were set down by the Elders, all commands taken as though they were the voice of Primus. Defiance of those laws and commands often ended poorly. He wished they'd found this better path forward that they had here without nearly destroying their homeworld and splitting their people in two. If someone was going to get hurt, that upset him.
"The track should be fine, yes. I do understand the concern of transitioning between ground and flight. Calibrating my walking and running speed following my revival took some effort. Flight will always come more naturally to me as well."
He smiled at her and extended a hand. He knew his name would probably carry some weight for her, and hoped to get it out of the way. "It is nice to meet you; though I would have wished for better circumstances. I am Skyfire."
"I'm certain that if there is such an emergency, you will respond with great alacrity, Whirl."
