“What the frag do you mean you can’t tell us anything!?”
Nick was getting frustrated, first he’d been picked up from school by some no name Autobot. And now he, Ironhide’s younger kids, and a couple dozen others were rounded up at Autobot HQ because some sort of emergency was going down. Honestly? Nick was more worried for his dad than anything. Especially now that he was officially Bee’s kid - he couldn’t help but worry.
Of course; the Autobot he’d snapped at didn’t have answers either.
All he knew was that if they were all here, it had to be something BAD. Then the murmurs went out that GHOST had gone rogue in a big way. His heart skipped a beat… Was he OK? But his reply from the mech was as confused as he was. What the heck was going on?
”Mr. Weyland,” Nick almost didn’t respond to his biological last name. ”If you’ll take a deep breath. We’ll talk to you all about it and release you to your parents soon.”
How soon was “soon”, Nick wondered as he slumped against a couch. He’d always wanted to see Autobot HQ but this was definitely not the way he wanted to do it.

Spike had been called into Autobot HQ, and for the first time in his life, he wasn't happy about it. The Autobots had called most of their human allies into Autobot City, especially the kids. Sometimes some of his friends forgot that Spike was an adult. He couldn't entirely blame them since his lifespan didn't quite match up with theirs. Nor could he really blame Prime and the others wanting to keep him safe, exosuit or not. Still, he rolled in and transformed back, rolling back the helmet and looking over at Pipes, who was giving one of the kids a hard time. Looking at the boy, he recognized him from the picture. That was the boy who Bumblebee had adopted; he thought the boy's name was Nick.
He rolled his eyes, but decided to stay calm about it. Still, he could at least take a lead here and keep the next generation of kids like himself safe. "Pipes, you're relieved. Roll out, report to Prime. I'll handle things here."
The bot looked at Spike and nodded, "Uh... Okay."
He looked at the kids and held up a finger until he was sure they were all alone. Then he waved with a smile. Sure, he was as tall as an Autobot, but most of these kids were used to people of that height. The fact that his exosuit had refinished spare parts from their friends and parents didn't help. It wasn't the frankenbot that it had been as Autobot X, but you could still tell if you knew. It was little things, like seeing Bumblebee's wheel-covers on his hips, or Ironhide's shoulder plates, or other parts - they all were rebuilt to match by Ratchet and Wheeljack, but for those who were familiar with their Autobot friends, those little details would stand out clear as day. "Hi. You all can call me Spike."
He waited for the others to realize that they knew who he was, and waited for them to calm down after that. He looked around. "I get that you all want to be out there helping; I know, because that's where I want to be. There's a lot of stuff going on right now. But there's times that we have to sit back and trust our Autobot friends; this is one of them. Believe me, if there was something any of us could be doing directly, right this minute, I would make sure we get there. We are not doing 'nothing'. We're staying safe, and we're giving our friends the strength to keep going."
He looked at Nick when he finished that little impromptu speech, who was the one definitely 'leading the charge'. He gestured for the boy to walk with him, and sat down, stepping out of the exosuit (and locking it) so that he was standing on human scale. He looked at Nick and extended a hand to shake. "Hey. Nick, right? Bumblebee's told me a lot about you. He's really proud of you, and how well you've been doing. Sorry we had to meet like this."

What in the Frankenstein's Monster creation?
On one hand, Nick almost had to question who the guy who showed up was. And he also wanted to know where he could get a suit like that, honestly. But whoever he was, he must have had some pull around here if he was able to get Pipes to chill out. He was pretty sure that he was five seconds from flipping on him. Wait... Spike? As in Spike Witwicky? What was a legend like him doing here? If anyone looked at him they would see he was straightening himself a little bit.
Shit, last thing he needed to do was look like an idiot in front of his father's best friend, and the head of Human-Autobot relations.
So he tried to play it cool when he'd motioned for him to walk with him. "Oh, uh, yeah, that's me. Sorry, I just uh... My first time doing anything like this. It's got me freaked I'm not normally like..." Wait, Bumblebee had talked to Spike Witwicky about him? He could feel himself a little shellshocked by that. "Wait - Dad talks about me like that? Wow, I uh... Never figured he did considering the whole laying low thing."
It did make him feel good - even if it surprised him. And caused him to blush a bit. "Sorry if I made an aft out of myself back there."

Spike actually had to laugh at the way Nick was expressing himself. "Nick, you're still human, don't forget that. But yeah, you were being a bit of a mudflap to Pipes. He's just doing his job, keeping all of us safe." His smile extended a bit further though, and he took the boy by the shoulder.
"I'm part of his laying low. Probably the only human who knew what was going on, really. Any time you don't feel like living with Megatron's companion Dot, her family, and Bumblebee, you have a home with me and Carly." obvious that Spike didn't fully know about the Terrans yet, though his demeanor and perspectives would make him a clear person to tell. "Really, don't worry about being a jerk, dude. You were doing it for the right reasons; Pipes won't hold it against you. Heck, I mean what I said. If I thought I'd help Bumblebee or Prime or any of the others out there, we'd be rolling out. As-is? We sit tight, ready to call up Teletraan if they end things go south."

Nick nodded his head.
Only human, right. Sometimes it was hard to remind himself about that, considering how much time he’d spent with Bee. But it was still nothing bad, he figured. “Yeah I guess so… I just get protective of dad is all,” Nick explained honestly, lowering his gaze. “I know dad loves me and would want me safe. But the feeling’s mutual. I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to him….”
This was a big jump, he realized. A year ago he hadn’t even known how to be part of a proper family. But his time around the Terrans and Bumblebee had shown him that.
He did chuckle a bit about if he ever needed somewhere to lay low. Though he also had a feeling he should have figured Spike was behind helping him. “I’ll uh, keep it in mind. Especially since I can be a trouble magnet. I’ve already been kidnapped once,” he said jokingly. “Don’t bring that up to dad though. Scared the scrap out of him there.”

Spike put a hand on Nick's shoulder for a moment, then rolled up his sleeve. The scar on his upper arm wasn't bad, but it was obvious that the wound had hurt. Spike had a few cuts and scrapes like that - but he was still alive, and each of those small scars reminded him of a time when he'd done something good to help bring about the more peaceful world they lived in now, and hopefully, the better world to come. "Nick, Bumblebee is my best friend in the world. I got this by getting in between him and Ravage, back in the day. Believe me when I say that I know what you're feeling. I know what I did when I saw him getting hurt; and even if it was dumb, it was the right thing to do for my friend. Right now, you and I are the only two with direct experience of Decepticon attacks here. If anything happens, those other kids over there will be relying on us to save the day; not just the Autobots."
He nodded at the comment about Nick's kidnapping, and sighed as he rolled his sleeve back down. "I was kidnapped a couple times, too. So was my dad, and so were my friends. Optimus, Ironhide, Bumblebee, and the others saved us. I'm very glad you weren't hurt."
Spike thought for a moment, then realized something. He knew exactly what was going on; as upsetting as that was for him. The organization he and Optimus had strived for was going wrong, and Spike wasn't going to let that happen without a fight. But right now, right this moment, this was what it meant to be one - to protect humans and Autobots both, keeping them safe here while those who were best at fighting went out and stood on the front line against corruption. "Tell me something... what do you know about why all of us are here?"

Depend on him?
Nick kind of hoped not. He has never been a leader type, hell, before he’d come to live with Bumblebee he’d been shy despite his many friends. He wasn’t sure he knew how to do any of that. Especially when Spike had just told him how he’d gotten between Ravage and Bumblebee. “I think I’ll leave most of the leading to you. You got certified badass status with that,” he admitted jokingly. “I barely managed to get a hold of Ravage’s cables and hurt him. But I think that pissed Soundwave off more than anything.”
He crossed his arms and looked thoughtful. “I don’t know… I guess I’ll just feel better about this when I see him. I… Know it’s silly. But I don’t like being away from him in bad situations,” he admitted. “I think it’s because he’s the first real “parent” I had. Having something going down makes the idea of losing him more real.”
Did he know what was going on? No, but he had a bad gut feeling about that too. He’d had a bad feeling since he’d talked to Scott a week ago. “I don’t know. But I’m hoping it’s not what I think it is,” Nick explained honestly. “My friend, Scott, he’s been going through some weird changes… And the way his dad reacted got me worried something really bad is happening with GHOST.”

Spike saw the realization emerge in Nick's eyes as he realized the weight of his place as someone connected to the Autobots. When he heard that Nick had gone a round with Ravage, that brought the kid up a little further in his estimation. "Did he pull the thing where he sicced Ravage on you, and while you're dealing with that creepazoid cat, Laserbeak or Buzzsaw swoop in behind you and pick you up into the air?"
It was typical thing for the casseticons to do; and had even tripped up Bumblebee once or twice. "Gotta stay low, keep your arms in close. That's the only way I ever got loose from Laserbeak on my own."
It was obvious that Spike saw the boy as a kindred spirit, and more importantly, as extended family. "You're also the first family he's had that hasn't been the Autobots - and the only one in a long while, since he was undercover for so long. It's all new. Just... remember that you're not alone out here. It's not the two of you against the world. You have me, and some friends you've never even met yet, and you both will always have Optimus and the Autobots, too."
When he heard about Scott, Spike blinked. "Changes like what?"

Huh, that was good to know.
Though of course that hadn’t been the case with his encounter. He’d actually gone toe to toe with Ravage, and while he hadn’t won, he had managed to hurt him. Something he’d initially worn with pride, but also after spending some time there found sympathy for. They were struggling, or at least it seemed that way. “I uh… I mostly got attacked by Ravage and picked up by the big guy. When I told him I was Bee’s kid I don’t think he was taking chances of me escaping,” Nick admitted. “I did manage to get a good tug on Ravage’s wires. But I don’t know… A part of me feels bad about the whole situation. The things he told me GHOST did to them…”
That said, when Spike put his and Bee’s relationship into perspective it did give Nick a bit of pause. He’d never… Thought about it like that. Honestly, he was so used to being the responsible one he did forget he had people who loved and cared about him now. Like one big, extended family. “Yeah I uh… Forget that sometimes. When I was with my uncle i was alone more than I should have been,” he explained. “Sometimes I have to remind myself I’m not taking care of myself anymore I guess.”
What kind of changes? Well that was a definite and immediate loaded question. “Well, he sprouted from shorter than me to over six feet in the last three months,” Nick pointed out. “And that’s not even counting the fact dude can bend metal now. I’ve seen him do it.”

What little Spike knew of what happened with the Decepticons in G.H.O.S.T.'s hands turned his stomach. That wasn't how they'd meant it to be - and he'd be damned if that was how it stayed. He was no friend to the Decepticons, never would be. In the end, he didn't mind the idea of Ravage and Soundwave being scrapped. Maybe even by his own hand.
"You are not responsible for the actions of others, Nick. It's a big lesson to learn, but it's one you have to accept. You can't change everything. You can't make other people do the right thing. All sentient beings have free will. What happened to them was wrong, and we'll fix it so it never happens again to anyone else. At the same time, I don't have too much sympathy for Soundwave or Ravage. Believe me, they'd have done worse to you if they had the chance. I'll apologize to them someday when they're in prison for what they've done, but that's it."
His tone went a bit dark for a moment, but he took a deep breath and smiled. "Sorry, old memories die hard. But you're right, it's not just you taking care of yourself. You have family to back you now. Whether we carry the Autobrand or not, this is your family."
Spike gestured up to his exosuit, which proudly bore the scarlet Autobrand on its chest, a spare part first fashioned for the ancient 'bot Skyfire. It meant as much to Spike as if he'd had it tattooed into his own skin.
"Wait, bend metal? We're not just talking about a tin can, or playing with gallium and aluminum, right?"

Nick had heard that before.
And he was sure that Spike was probably right about that. Unfortunately, but obviously, Soundwave hadn’t exactly been nice. And he couldn’t forget that he had basically tortured him by cutting his bond to Bumblebee. “I mean, I know… He really hurt me during that. He didn’t understand how dad and I could have a spark-bond,” Nick explains. Summing up the complicated type of bond he had with Bee, since he didn’t technically have a spark. “So he cut off the connection and it was… Bad. Trust me I know how bad he can be.”
He didn’t want to relive that, at all. It still was really hard on him after all, and a real shock to the system about how bad things could get.
As for Scott bending metal. He really wished that he could alleviate Spike’s shock. But of course he also couldn’t do that. “Uhhhh more like he once took a fender off a car to see what he could do and was able to break it with his bare hands metal.” He explained.

Spike didn't really understand the connection that Nick was talking about, but he'd learned to accept things that he didn't fully understand years ago, when he and Chip had become friends. And then, of course, there was Carly - the moment he fully understood everything about her, he'd be shocked.
"I'm not sure I understand either. Someday, you two might want to explain it to some of the smart people Bee & I know; and then they'll translate it back into knucklehead so I get it. The important thing about what happened is that you're okay, though."
He smiled at Nick, trying to lighten the mood. He wasn't an idiot, not by any means, but he recognized his limits.
Still, the comment about Scott bending metal like that bugged him. "That's very, very weird. I wonder what's going on with him."

Oh! Right. Sometimes Nick forgot that bons only really happened in Cybertronians most of the time. Wheeljack had only in recent years built the sigils, and even then. Unless you were the kid of an Autobot you weren't likely to have or experience one in your lifetime. It had just been on his shoulder over a year now, and felt so... Natural by this point. "Oh! It's really cool," He rolled up his sleeve to show his sygil. "Wheeljack built these. Your parent puts their "sprak signature" in it and then these wires connect it to your heart... Or something like that. Wheeljack explains it better," He admitted honestly. "But it's like I can feel him - talk to him when I want too."
He then added. "Like sometimes he'll send me love and stuff through the bond and vise-versa. Just like a real creation bond between Autobots," He epxlained with a smile. "I don't think even 'Jack knows how it worked. But he called it "magic". If you ask me it just proves that us kids were meant to be with our parents."
After all, if Primus and God didn't want a bond like that to exist, it wouldn't. He then admitted. "I guess the lot of us are lucky - we have a bond with the Bots no one else can really say they do." He the explained. "But it got scary when he cut me off from it. It was like my heart was missing something. It was a lot of pain and..." He shuddered.
Nick shook his head at the mention of Scott, he'd been wondering the same thing and not in a good way. "His dad works with GHOST, so I can't imagine it's anything good... Unfortunately."
