| You're wondering who I am (Secret, secret, I've got a secret) Machine or mannequin (Secret, secret, I've got a secret) With parts made in Japan (Secret, secret, I've got a secret) I am the Modern Man |
Music filled the tiny repair shop as Sunny, in their Holoform, worked on a broken servos they had found on their annual trip to the Spacebridge. Unlike the majority of Cybertronians, the Mini-con never went on the same date. They visited the site a few days later, the date that they came back online pushing them to make the pilgrimage. While exploring the spot where they had hid for the better part of a human month, they noticed something shiny poking behind a branch. After some excavating and digging, Sunny brought a half-destroyed servos. They had put it in their backpack before continuing their silent recollection of their miraculous survival. Back in Autobot City later that day, the mini-con had dropped everything to start working on the broken part, not expecting to be disturbed for a long time.

Skyfire had requested the location of a parts repair shop from Metroplex, because one of his planetary probes hadn't deployed properly when he tested it. It was a geological probe, made for drilling deep into rocks and identifying the minerals therein. He had the missile-like device in hand as he walked into the small shop. He looked around, seeing the human hologram. He spoke calmly.
"Hello, my name is Skyfire. I was directed here by the City services, as a parts repair shop. Can you repair probes?"

An alert that someone had entered the shop flashed in Sunny's HUD. They put their tools down, turning around to face the customer with a curious look. The bot introduced himself and what his query was. A wide smile appeared on the holoform, a hand pointing to the empty working bench by the Autobot.
"Greetings, I'm Sunny, welcome to my repair shop! You were directed correctly, please put your probe down. I will be with you shortly."
The Mini-con faced their work and put all the pieces scattered in their desk in a compartment, put away all their tools back in their labelled place before turning back towards Skyfire. Sunny was excited to take on a new project, with enthusiasm, they grabbed their scanner before walking up to the work bench.
"Would you mind sharing what happened to the poor thing?"
Sunny never liked to see machines in any states of disrepair, always making sure everything leaving their shop were in it's best shape.

Skyfire placed the malfunctioning probe down on the bench where he was directed. The small unit was totally inert. He looked at it and shook his head, annoyed at the unit. If it could get restored to function, he'd be able to use it in his exploration of the Earth. As it stood, the situation was incredibly frustrating for the giant Seeker.
"Sadly, nothing 'happened'. I was performing a standard launch-and-deploy test, and this probe didn't deploy, or respond to queries. I've done all basic maintenance tests - the power cell appears to be charged, the engine system should be functional. I'm not sure if it's the sensor array, or the onboard computer failing. I've had the occasional 'dud' before, but this one seems unusual. It didn't trigger my self-repair protocols. It just sort of fell out like a piece of dead metal."
Skyfire looked at it, obviously annoyed. For a Transformer, having a secondary device fail was like suddenly having a finger or limb that just suddenly didn't work. And for a long-range scanner unit, it was even more frustrating.
"Obviously, having it fail is highly inconvenient. Do you believe you'll be able to repair it?"

The mini-con came closer and scanned the probe with an inquisitve hum. The Seeker had been digilent and the basic attempt at diagnostic was impressive. Sunny had more than once had to repair something in a much worst state of disrepair with almost no explanations at all. They appreciated the sincerity of the Autobot and their attempt at finding the problem. Such a piece of tech was very important for data collecting so it made sense this was a time sentitive matter.
Sunny re-orgnized their tasks list, putting this project as a Priority. They looked up, up and uuuup to the Seeker with a bright and confident smile.
"Rest assured Skyfire, I will do my best to ensure your probe is operative at it's best capacity as quickly as possible!"
Humming along the song playing, Sunny put the scanner on the work bench, reaching for a few tools. Gently, they opened a few compartments as the results of the scan rolled on their HUD. Ah, there it was.
"Fried onboard computer."
Now that they had a better idea of what the problem was, Sunny grabbed a new tool and dug deeper, with a gentle and steady hand.
"It is a bit uncommon for tech to act this way but Earth is very different from Cybertron and certain components can interfere with smaller circuitry." Whispering a small apology, Sunny pulled the fried part out of the probe. "Bad news, this can't be salvaged. I do have something I could retro-fit but it would take me a few days. Would you happen to have a spare one of these laying around?"
Sunny moved toward their computer, typing in their inventory to see if they had anything else that could work. Then he opened a new tab on his browser, looking up he anything human could be used for their purpose.
"Aside from that, your probe should be working fine. It's just a question for you to decide which course of action you want to pursuit."

The Mini-Con worked quickly and with great effectiveness. Skyfire tried not to let his internal annoyance show; he could usually maintain his own parts, but something about this probe's malfunction eluded him. He thought for a moment. The probe test had taken place a day after he'd done just a random patrol orbit around Witwicky, going out over the outskirts and the woods. He knew that it was energon radiation along with the cold that had knocked him into stasis-lock originally.
When Sunburst reported that the probe's onboard computer was fried, Skyfire's expression changed to one of concern. "Can you identify the cause? I don't want to have any of my other probes become suddenly inoperable. I do have a spare unit, though."
He opened the shields over his missile racks, and Sunburst would realize that just the weight of Skyfire's probe complement probably justified his Ultra class size. He drew out one of the ballistic missiles and removed the warhead before removing the computer module. It was ancient, even by Autobot standards, proof that Skyfire was both a very old bot and one loath to fight. From visual guesswork alone, Sunburst would probably be able to tell that this missile was from the Golden Age, a cold-pressed die cast.

Sunburst was happy something could be use to replace the broken component, wanting the probe to be better faster. The query about how it happened was an interesting one and caught the Mini-con's interest. They went back to the work bench and scanned the fried part.
The readings were all over the place, nothing abnormal jumping at the front. Curious. Sunny took the piece and scratched some grime, bringing it to another tool for analysis. While the diagnostic ran, Sunny made quick work of replacing the component. Having spent the majority of their lives in the bellies of ships, Sunny had no idea the tech they were handling was ancient. They simply did their job with the same consideration they would have for any other thing they had repair before. Once the new motherboard was in place, Sunny put the repair tools away and brought the cleaning products out next. While cleaning, Sunny found a small piece of organic material. The Mini-con held it quizzically. "This might be what cause the issue."The beeps of their scanning being completed alerted Sunny. The readings were not conclusive, making Sunny even more certain the organic material was the cause. "My conclusion is that this was the cause of a small electrical fire that was localized to this probe only. It a one off that shouldn't happen again, Sir!"

What the Mini-Con brought out didn't make sense - organic material? He wondered how old that could possibly be. Without running it through some kind of intensive scanner, he wouldn't be able to know what in the world had gotten into his probes. But, at least he knew what happened now, and could try to prevent it in the future.
"Intriguing. I will have to take this back to my laboratory and study it to identify what it is. If I cannot, I will have to send it to Perceptor."
The idea of his probe having a fire worried him. The repairbot's certainty was helpful, at least, and he nodded. "I am glad that I don't have to worry about an onboard fire. That would be a significant problem if it was to continue long-term."

Sunny used pincers to place the piece of organic material in a container before handing it over to Skyfire.
“I am actually not surprised! Lots of organic components get into parts. It grosses out most bots when I bring it up, but humans shed micro particles of skin that get cycled in venting systems. I’ve seen feathers in missiles so many times. Leaves can get anywhere. Pollen. This world is filled with weird organic elements that mess with Cybertronian components. Human technology suffers from the same problem of decaying circuitry from eroding and other microparticles creating issues.”
Once the probe was all cleaned, Sunny ran a full diagnostic and hummed in approval.
“There! All fixed and clean. Ready for your next project, Sir!”

Skyfire nodded at the Mini-Con's assessment of how organic material could get into their parts. That much made sense, but it still left him worried. He hoped that it was at least terrestrial organic material, not from one of the alien planets he and Starscream had visited on the survey journey which had brought them to Earth, and sent Skyfire to his unintentional tomb. He took back the probe from Sunburst, then the sample, which he slipped into a compartment made for similar containers. His function was, of course, obvious, that he was a long-range Seeker and a dedicated scientist. If nothing else, the fact that he only considered bringing something to Perceptor after he'd study it was probably enough to make a point about his expertise.
"I greatly appreciate your help with this, Sunburst. The concern which I have about the organic material doesn't seem to be a 'gross' one. It's merely that the probe to which it was connected has sat dormant for several millenia; I'd only queried it and found the fault because I will need it shortly. I sincerely hope that the biological matter is from Earth, and not some other world. It simply wouldn't do to have even bacteria from Junk or another world on Earth."

Sunny smiled, happy that Skyfire was satisfied with their findings. The tall shuttled seemed disturbed by the organic material, a little too concerned in the mini-con’s opinion, but it wasn’t their place to speak. Instead they started to clean their repair desk, nodding along.
Now the part they hated.
“So, no to be push-over but how would you like to settle your bill, Sir? If I may make a suggestion, I would love to keep your missile as payment. I will dispose of the charge as I’m not interested by explosives but models this old are very rare to come by and I could reuse every single part for diverse repairs. I also take human money, american dollars mainly, and a few Cybertronians currencies. It’s up to you!”

Skyfire nodded and handed over the missile which had been the donor unit for the probe after carefully removing and storing the explosive payload. If he didn't need it to section raw energon, he'd need it to fight. "There's no need for you to dispose of the explosive. I use the charges when I do geological studies. I have reason to believe that there will be a significant study if this probe's mission returns expected data."
It was depressing that he almost expected a fight. Whether it was that Mandroid person, or Decepticons who refused to give up fighting. At least Sunburst wasn't a combatant.

“Thank you kindly, Sir!”
Sunny grabbed the old technology with reverence, gently settling it on their work bench. They made quick work of stripping the casing, discarding the pieces without a thought. They couldn’t help the small gasp of glee bubbling inside them to escape. The parts were well preserved, Sunny was seeing components they hadn’t seen since before the War. They chirped and cooed as they disassembled everything, so engrossed in their discoveries that Skyfire was completely forgotten.
