Wheeljack supposed understanding was one thing.
At the very least, if this was some Decepticon in hiding. He hoped that meant there was an understanding between them. There was no reason to target loved ones if they were just having a simple chat right? “I have a son, he’s a marine and the light of my life. I’d let my spark be torn out if I had to, if it meant I protected him,” he admitted honestly. “It’s hard not to jump in ready to defend after you spent your own life fighting in a war.”
He then huffed. “But I’m retired now… They tell me I don’t have to be like that.”
Holding it hostage? That wasn’t exactly necessary but at the same time, the mech wanted to keep a close optic on it. He’d rather not risk it. “Maybe for now if you don’t mind,” he explained. “At least for my peace of mind.”

“Don’t mind at all, Sir. Wouldn’t have offered it if I wasn’t up for it! I’ll be back in jiff!”
Starscream all but ran away, trying to stay in character and stomp off. He made it to the convenience store and faked a smile at the clerk when the bell rang to let him know someone had walked in. The Seeker made quick use of buying two kits, paying with some of the money he had on him, asking for more change while he was at it.
'Have a whole roll of quarters, Peter. I know you like that F1 game!'
The ex-Air Commander grumbled a thanks and left with a plastic bag containing the two kits and the roll of change. Making his way back, the nervousness came right back. Focus Starscream.
“Bonjour! Got everything here.” Starscream lifted the bag. “Show me that wheel of yours and it’ll be fixed in a jiffy!”

Wheeljack transformed back into a car.
Honestly, he hoped that he wasn’t putting his faith in the wrong person. But he could feel his anxiety building. What if he had just given too vital of information to somebody. On one hand, he wanted to believe maybe he was wrong. But on the other hand, he hated to think that way.
So when the man came back he decided to relax a bit. Turning his wheel so that it’d be at least visible.
After a moment, he decided maybe he’d turn the conversation on him. It wouldn’t be a problem, even if it went sideways he might be able to truly catch them in the act. “So Pierre, tell me, how long exactly have you been in the United States?”

Starscream went to his truck to get a jack and tools, dropping the extra repair kit and his coin in his truck. He walked back toward the Autobot, starting a small rambling as he gets to work.
“Not long, Sir. I do contract work so it takes me all around the globe. I love it here, cars in France are nothing compared to American cars. There’s NASCAR and CASCAR too which are different classes but just as fun to watch. Formula1 is my favourite, I come here all the time to play the simulator… No that’s not the right work in English… Game? Yes, the F1 game! That’s how I got the nickname Peter, I’m here all the time ”
Starscream had the wheel off by the time he was done. Turning it around he gently pressed on the tire looking for the hole in it. When he hears the hiss of air, he smile triumphantly.
“Found it!”

Wheeljack might have tilted his helm if he'd been in robot mode.
This guy just continued to act nervous didn't he? Though his story also sounded interesting, a contracter? Out in Witwicky? Or at least nearby? That was a little hard to believe. But at the same time, Wheeljack didn't know much about farm life. Maybe they needed a lot of contractors, maybe they didn't. "Interesting. I find formula one fun enough. Though I don't watch it as much anymore," He explained honestly. "You sound like quite the expert by contrast."
As he held up the object triumphantly, Wheeljack sighed with relief though. "I really can't thank you enough."

Starscream took the patch out of the packet and used the glue to fix the hole. Once he was done with the complicated part, the Seeker started to bable absentmindly again, as he held the patch while it dried.
"The glue needs a minute to dry and you'll be ready to go." Shaking his holoform head's Starscream went on. "Oh no Sir, I am not expert at all. Just a fan! My specialty is refining fuel, so my interest in F1 is the fuel concoction they use. Did you know they use different tires depending if they need speed or grip? There's lots of science behind it, it's very interesting."
Getting up, Starscream moved closer to the Autobot, putting the wheel back on.
"There Sir, all fixed!"

Wheeljack listened to him carefully.
That was actually interesting, though he sometimes wondered how humans even kept track of what they needed! He thought this over while he watched the glue dry anxiously. Honestly, he just wanted to feel not so constricted at this point. Not much caring who or what the human might have been at the current moment - as he was friendly enough. "Huh, never would have thought of that. But I guess it does make sense."
Testing his wheel a moment, he gave a sigh. "Huh, perfect. Thanks again!" He added. Then thoughtfully added. "Can I buy ye a beer for your trouble?"

Starscream had to weigh the pros and cons of having a beer with an Autobot. He could glean more information, the barman could also confirm his cover story, he still had time before he was scheduled to go back to the hanger and relieve Nightshroud of her single watch duty. Those were good pros. In the cons column, were the usual risks. As long as he tried to steer away from family topics and more on G.H.O.S.T. intel, it might be worth it.
Deciding to risk it, Starscream nodded but lifted a finger in amendment.
“I’ll say yes to the drink, Sir, but I don’t like beer. I prefer wine. Lead the way!”

That made sense, he seemed like a wine type.
Wheeljack on the other hand, didn't drink or at least hadn't tried to drink, human alcohol. So he'd just sit down for a chat at the most. Which was probably just as well, he still had quite a bit to drive and while he wasn't a lightweight. If they got into interesting enough conversation, he may be the type that could overdrink, overshare, and get a DUI. Ha.
"I hope you don't mind that I ain't gonna drink. Never done human alcohol before," He explained. "Plus I got a bit of a drive ahead of me. But I can at least buy it for you." He teased.
As Wheeljack headed up to the bar, he decidedly just said. "Hey, bartender. Whatever this guy wants on my tab." He didn't really have a tab. But he guessed he could start one. What the hey?

Starscream sat next to Wheeljack and waved to the bartender. The man smiled and nodded, knowing exactly what he liked to drink. Beer was disgusting but the Seeker really enjoyed wine. The taste was better than any energon he ever had. One day he’d find a way to make energon taste as good as wine. Side pet project.
“Thank you, Sir! I’ll only have a glass, I have to head back home soon.”
The glass was put in front of him and Starscream nodded a thanks. He took a sip, knowing full well his every move were observed. He chuckled nervously, putting the glass down.
“I’m curious, have you ever left the United States? The earth is pretty big. Ever visited France?”

Ah, that made sense.
After all, Wheeljack probably had to get back home soon himself. His son was still expecting a phone call at some point that he got home safe. And while he might believe that he'd just forgotten... He knew that Dane probably worried about his old mech more than the marine liked to admit. "Ah, yeah, I gotta hit the road before too long too," He admitted. "It's getting later than I expected."
Oh, had he visited places! Of course, he had, but it had been years ago now, back during the war. "Oh, yeah. I had plenty an adventure overseas. Back when the war was still a thing," He admitted. "Used to get dragged all over - not as much anymore. I should honestly do more traveling now that Dane is grown. I hear France is beautiful anyway."

Ordinarily, Starscream wouldn’t be against stooping as low as kidnapping kids to get an upper hand on the Autoscums. However, the thought of getting back to the base to find Nightshroud missing was enough to make him purge with blind panic. He was getting too soft. Taking another sip of his wine, Starscream hummed at the vague tales of travelling.
“France is beautiful. I miss it. It’s a gorgeous country to fly over. America is too big, getting from one place to the other is such a pain.”
He did miss flying, hadn't stretched his wings much aside from the occasional flight with Nightshroud.

America being too big was one way of putting it.
He leaned back as he thought about that fact, how big the United States was and how hard it was to get across. It was made moreso when he'd started his job with the Reunification program and it took him around the US. Meeting candidates and helping out in hopeless situations... Wheeljack didn't do the international side though so he couldn't speak on that. "The US is huge. Honestly, I've been all around this part of the world now. I work with this thing called the Reunification program. Adopt out kids to Autobots all over the world," He explained. "But I mostly handle adoptions stateside. And I've been... Well let's just say I've seen the good and the bad all over."
He looked thoughtful. "Last year I had to spend two weeks on the road to visit this sibling group in New York. The drive about killed me I think. I miss Space Bridge technology."

Starscream missed flying so much, but he knew it was too risky. Even sitting here now, sipping casually on wine was incredibly risky. Sure, he was learning things from the Autobot but nothing of much value. Wheeljack was babbling more about fleshling than anything else. The Seeker was growing bored of hearing about them.
“I did not enjoy New York, the smell there is so foul. I’m not a fan of big cities. I like being able to see the stars.”

Wheeljack wasn't a big fan of New York either honestly.
It was big, and like the guy said, it smelled like slag. So the fact that he had to sit here and think about it at all was not the most exciting thing. Heck, he wouldn't even talk too much about his job if he had known he was talking to a fellow Transformer. But, it was the one thing that he had in common with the humans. So he always tried to find common ground.
"New York can be big and ugly, I agree. It reminds me of Kaon back home," He admitted honestly. "I think the nicest place I've ever been though? Hawaii by far. I spent a couple of my vacation days there this summer."
